Nothing much interesting in Ohio. We just drove straight across. WE stopped for dinner in Indiana and drove on to St. Louis. We had been considering staying there and touring Saint Louis the next day, but weather reports said it was going to rain which would mean that touring would be a lot less funa and traffic would be worse so we kept going into Missouri. Which was a good thing because it did rain, and then snow. I think they got about 2 feet.

Gateway Arch and Old Cathedral. I was confused about the Hebrew lettering on a Cathedral. According to the internet, when the cathedral was first built, it was the only large house of worship in the city, and the bishop let other religions use it, so he put Hebrew letters on to make other people feel comfortable. A nice story.

Helicopter crash!

It was a helicopter crash. The helicopter brought. in a poisoning patient from Sayre. When it tried to leave the 6,000-pound Eurocopter EC-135 immediately lost power and came crashing down on the rooftop helipad. Then they brought in the cranes. Thank G-d it failed when it did. They fly right over the city and could have killed who knows how many people aside from just the pilots.

I was walking past Chestnut street today, and I saw a helicopter hanging from a crane and slowly being lowered to the ground. I guess Harrisburg's medevac helicopter was broken and unsafe to fly to a helicopter repair hangar.

National Zoo in Washington

Last weekend, my brother and I visited the national zoo in Washington, and had an awesome time. We saw America's cows, maned wolves, capybaras (the world's largest rodent) and giant amazonian fish. But the best were the asian river otters who were incredibly playful and cute, and the new baby panda, Tai Shan. I got videos of both of them with my new phone, so you can share their cuteness.

My first rotation was psychiaty at MHOP. It was a blast. The attendings basically let you do as much as you wanted to do and enjoyed teaching, and I wanted to do as much as possible so I had a great time and learned alot. I also met Melissa about halfway through and we really hit it off after the first date. So life was much more pleasant than last year.

One Day Closer to Paradise

Rodin's "TheThinker" is certainly a good statue, but I have always felt that what it needed to be truly great is to get rid of the statue and maybe drop a twig on the base that's left. Then it would really be art.

Some may disagree with that, but they clearly have no conception of modern art. In 2003 Martin Creed's "Light Bulb turning On and Off" (and that title pretty much describes it) won the prestigous Turner Prize for "making art out of almost nothing." This year, the Royal Academy did them one better by leaving out the art entirely. Instead they nominated the base for David Hansel's statue "One Day Closer to Paradise" , which had apparrently been separated from his sculpture of a head and was entered seperately. The head itself was considered too mundane. Considering this, what would you show up with to win an art competition in England? I'm thinking:
2007- bring nothing at all and say nothing. Let the judges interpret my work.
2008- Don't even show up.
2009- Nominate my brother who doesn't even do art.
2010- My possible children are artists/art in potentia. Truly they already represent the greatest and most cutting edge of modern art.

I've been down in Baltimore recently studying with my twin brother, and I've built up a collection of pictures, so here they are.

Molly Pitcher as a nickname given to women who brought water to soldiers as they were firing cannons during the Revolutionary War. The most famous one, fought in the battle of Monmouth and when here husband was wounded took his place at a cannon. She was later awarded a warrant as a noncommissioned officer by George Washington. Apparrently there were several women who did similar deeds during the Revolutionary War and the record is a little confused, but the two top candidates are Mary Hays MacCauly and Margaret Corbin.

Lunch at Mikasa by City Hall. Good meal for very reasonable price. Took a while to preapare. I came at 1:30, so I wonder how they handle the crowd at lunch.

I got another flat tire, but while it was being fixed I got to walk around the Drexel area, which I haven't done, even though I technically go to that school. Here's a wierd stained glass scupture from the area.

That was a nice hiatus from blogging. Weeks later I'm finally getting around to posting pictures from my drive back from Chicago. It took about 14 hours with two hours for rest stops. Overall, though it was very relaxing because it was the first day in months that I didn't have to spend all my time studying and thinking about medicine. If I'd driven with someone else, I 'd have had to spend my non-driving time studying, which wouldn't have been fun.

I stopped for dinner in Brookville, PA. Here's the local Presbyterian church and cemetery.

Very unusually there was a rainbow on the same side of the sky as the sun. Normally, you only see rainbows facing away from the sun. Unfortunately, it's also very hard to tak pictures facing the sun. (It's the little streak of light in the middle. The sun is the black dot.)
