This all happenned to me way back in the summer of '02. Having recently finished college, my twin brother and I had decided to spend the summer exploring the orient and learning what we could until our obligations at medical school called us back. It was on the fifth day out from Hong Kong that the trouble started. We had travelled up the Xi river to a village in the Guanxi province. I had been teaching the locals the intricacies of Texas Hold Em, but when I leaned forward to gather a particularly renumerative pot, my lucky ace fell out of my pocket. Naturally I explained how I kept this card purely for sentimental and superstitous reasons, but apparrently they had a somewhat differrent understanding of fortune, one that was not so fortunate for me and my brother. So I grabbed the stuffed toad from the pot hauled Dave away from his conversation with the local priest and we lit out of there faster than pork buns in a dim sum restaurant. Soon we were deep in the surrounding jungle, and far beyond the sounds of pursit. Of course that also meant we were far beyond the sounds of the village, which made returning for the rest of our gear something of a challenge. (to be continued.)
