Win Lose or Draw

The upstairs SI group finished significantly before the downstairs group today, so we took a break and played pictionary.

Is it Staph Saprophyticus?

It turns out that medical students get very competitive over these games.

On the bright side.

On the other hand, the studying is going well. Reshma and I covered all of microbiology in 1 week and I think I know it a lot better than last time. Now on to immunology!

I think I'm losing my mind.

I always used to take great pride in my sense of direction. I was a boy scout when I was younger, and I could efforlessly find my way around in the wilderness in New York City or anywhere in between. If my friends and I were going anywhere I would be the one who always knew where we were and how to get to where we were going. Since I've moved to North Chicago it's been completely different. I get lost more often than I actually find my way the first time. And it's not just a little lost. It's always for a frickin' hour and I end up 10 miles away from where I want to go in the opposite direction.

And this is despite the fact that I normally know where I am. Every time I get lost I carefully check my map when I get home and see what mistake I made and what all the narmby streets are and then I carry an actual map so I can always know exactly where I am. And I normally do know where I am, but I still can't find my way back to where I want to go. Several times I've ended up on the right street going in the wrong direction for miles, when I didn't actually think I was even near that street.

Today, I went out to buy some groceries today at the local store which is only three miles away and which I had already been to several times. admittedly I got lost (in different ways!) two of those times. It's very frustrating and dispiriting because I feel like I'm losing my mind, and I don't even want to leave campus to drive anywhere because I'm afraid I only have an even chance of reaching somewhere uneventfully. Normally, I just keep going calmly, but today I just got so frustrated I wanted to tear my hear and break things. I even got lost walking down the street last month. Aaargh.

Lake Forest Oasis

The other week I got stuck on the road at midnight with rain and lightning and no gas and the clerks at the Lake Forest Oasis loaned me a gas can to fuel up my car. So I like them. Here ar some more pictures from the next day, when I came back to pay for the gas can.

Part of the Oasis is actually stretched over the highway. Pretty cool.

New knot book: The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Knots and Ropework

I saw this book in Border's when I was studying last weekend. I had a long debate with myself whether to get it, because I already had a knot book by the same author from 5 years ago so why do I need this one. On the other hand that one was big and clunky while this one was small and convenient. And, of course it had new knots, and was in the bargain bin so it was cheap. In the end I bought it. Having time to examine it I'm very happy that I did. It has much better illustrations and descriptions and by my count 56 new knots, all of which look useful and interesting especially a whole section of decorative knots, plaits and block and tackle systems that were completely missing from the previous version. I'm very happy with it. Well worth the money. The only problem is that it is not at all an "ultimate encyclopedia" of knots like it claims. It's just the opposite in that it narrowly concentrates on just a few knots you might actually use for a particular circumstance and how you should use them. Which for my purposes, of course, is even better than a huge encyclopedia.

If you want a real encyclopedia of knots, The Ashly Book of Knots is widely considered the bible of knotting. Clifford Ashley was an enthusiastic sailor and knotter who traveled around the world collecting knots and stories which he includes in this well written and illustrated book. It was by far the most comprehenesive at the time and still excellent today. The disadvantage is that he wrote his book in 1946 and there have been a number of interesting and useful knots discovered since then, which obviously would not be included. I don't know any modern texts that are as good generally speaking, though. I believe the International Guild of Knot Tiers is currently working on making an updated edition, which should be out soon. Hopefully they'll do a good job and we'll finally have one comprehensive modern knot collection.

Rand preventive care study.

Here's an interesting study from the NEJM that says that Americans only get 55% of reccomende care. Unusually they say that while blacks get less of intensive care treatments than whites they get slightly more preventive care. I'm not sure what to make of that. There's also a bunch of other demographic data I can't quite figure out what it means, but it looks interesting.

Potbelly's

Yesterday Reshma and I went to Barnes and Noble's and basically sat and studied Physio all day. Wow was it exhausting. After we got back and had dinner we barely had the energy to do a dozen practice questions. The picture is of me at Potbelly's where we went to lunch. Posted by Picasa

Great Movie Duels

One of the best parts of watching action movies is the great duels you see. They range from the classic (and longest) duel from "Scaramouche to Indiana Jones shooting his sword-wielding opponent before it even began. Then there are the amazing and dramatic duels from the original Star Wars series. Then came the Phantom Menace, which put athleticism and flashy moves over any grace or cleverness, and didn't make any sense as a story. Which was only slightly improved on in the following movies. After I saw those movies I wondered what happenned. Were they overwhelmed by the possibilities of new technology? Did Lucas interfere too much? After watching this fantasic video, I unfortunately have to conclude that the new Star Wars choreographers just sucked.

O'Hare's Painted Benches

The sign says "Made by the apprentice artists of Chicago's Gallery 27"
There were at least a dozen others each one more gorgeous than the one before.
